Industrial Vehicles

At SMU, a variety of industrial vehicles are used regularly on campus. ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãIndustrial Vehicle Program is a combination of multiple smaller programs (Forklift, Scissor-Lift, Aerial-Lift, Backhoe, Skid-steer, etc.) This Program contains industry standards, OSHA regulations, and ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãspecific standards.

Anyone who operates (students, staff, contractors, etc.) an industrial vehicle on ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãproperty will need to follow ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãsafety standards

ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãstudents or employees who want to use an industrial vehicle will need to receive authorized training from ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãORM. Training can be in-person or a combination of online and in-person training.

ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãSpecific Safety Standards:

  • All industrial vehicle lifts on campus require the operator to wear a fall protection harness.
  • Aerial Lifts nor scissor lifts will be operated at height with winds over 25 mph.
  • If traveling in any industrial vehicle, working in a high traffic area, or on the road, the area shall be blocked off or have dedicated flaggers or a pilot vehicle to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Industrial vehicles that have road vehicle lights or is a landscaping vehicle (lawnmowers, tractors, sprayers) do not need a pilot vehicle when operating on ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãowned roads.
  • No combustion engines may be operated inside a building without a method to exhaust contaminants and continues air monitoring.
  • Only authorized ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãemployees may operate ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãindustrial vehicles.
  • ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãcontractors shall not use ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãvehicles without prior approval from ÍæÅ¼½ã½ãORM.
